Hazard Recognition Training

What is the “Hazard Recognition Training” workshop?

Held in the rich natural environment surrounding the Nandabe-mura farmhouse pension, the Hazard Recognition Training workshop teaches accident awareness and risk management while awakening and sharpening your level of awareness of your surroundings.

Through taking part in Ouse’s Hazard Recognition Training, you will become aware of potential dangers lurking in nature, and acquire the skills needed to react before problems occur. Risk management, flexibility in thought and action, and an ability to generate ideas are crucial regardless of industry—and never more so in our increasingly mechanized society. The good news is that these skills can be trained. Come to Ouse—and set you and your team up for a safer future!

The Ouse Hazard Recognition Training workshop welcomes those with the following characteristics to participate, regardless of age, gender, occupation or industry:

  • those wishing to improve their level of awareness (for example, those who work in a dynamic work environment)
  • those who struggle with inflexibility and single-mindedness (for example, those seeking new perspective in their work)
  • those who sense a limit to the development of their potential (for example, those who feel limited in existing training)
  • those seeking to grow their potential (for example, youth, students, those recently promoted to positions of responsibility)
  • parents and guardians looking to give their children a new experience prior to taking entrance examinations or for independent projects

Workshop Details

Hazard Recognition Training takes place over two days and one night. It is generally organized into six stages.

1.Hazard Recognition Training

Ishii, the head of Nandabe-mura, provides an overview of hazard recognition, and discusses the dangers lurking in nature.

2. Hazard Recognition Worksheet

How much do you already know? Find out by filling out hazard recognition and countermeasures worksheets before training begins.

3.Nature Exploration

Practice hazard recognition while exploring the treasure trove of nature around Nandabe-mura, home to living creatures, plants, rice paddies, fields, biotopes, wells, log cabins, rivers and more. Look, touch, smell, listen, taste, and get to grips with nature!

4.Raft-making

Ready for adventure? We hope so! In groups, you will discuss, plan and build a raft before floating it in the river.

5.Woodwork and Bamboowork

Put your skills and sensibilities to work by using bamboo and wood from around the Nandabe-mura estate to create original works of your own. Afterwards, you and your fellow hazard-recognition trainees will show off your handiwork to each other.

6.Reflection

What have you learned over the past two days? Now is your chance to look back over the workshop from start to finish, and to reflect on whether you were able to recognize hazards, put countermeasures into place, and think and act with flexibility.
