The Makabe Household
Makabe, a part-time farmer, is the master of Maka-Chanchi, a farmhouse pension housed in a kominka (traditional Japanese-style country house). Surrounded by rice paddies and trees, visitors to Maka-Chanchi can fully enjoy rural life as well as the abundant nature of the area.
Makabe-san began offering farm experiences at the invitation of an acquaintance whose job was to arrange such opportunities for university students. Since 2010, with the support of the neighborhood, Makabe-san has also been welcoming guests into her home.
At Maka-Chanchi, you’ll be able to try your hand at cultivating and harvesting vegetables grown by Makabe, as well as savor meals made with freshly picked vegetables, rice, and seasonal ingredients. Visit Maka-Chanchi to discover the exquisite flavors of hearty soups and country cuisine.
One of the charms of staying at Maka-Chanchi is experiencing the building itself, an old Japanese-style house that stays cool in summer and is perfect to snuggle up in in the winter. The building’s bath offers another incredible experience: A traditional goemonburo cauldron bath heated directly from beneath, a soak will warm both body and soul.
One of the things I look forward to is listening to everyone’s stories, from toddlers and children to adults, and to discover the different ways in which everyone experiences life. It gives me so much vitality!
